Florida PSC Recognizes April as Water Conservation Month

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) urges Floridians to support April’s Water Conservation Month. With many families spending more time at home due to COVID-19, include everyone in finding creative ways to save water. 

“It’s important to support water conservation and water use efficiency, especially given our current environment. Even simple conservation strategies can reduce your family’s water usage and save money on your monthly bill,” said PSC Commissioner Donald J. Polmann.  “The PSC encourages water conservation through our education outreach, and we applaud every business, industry, school, and resident making a difference by reducing water usage.”

April was first established as Water Conservation Month in Florida 22 years ago. For three months--April, May and June--Florida’s temperatures increase but the state’s rainfall tends to lag behind irrigation requirements. As temperatures rise, so does outdoor water use. Commissioner Polmann invites Floridians to water smarter this April and implement these simple water saving measures:

Outdoors

• Follow local water restrictions and irrigate lawns only when needed.
• Use a hose nozzle to prevent water waste.
• Use a rain barrel to store rainwater for watering your yard or plants.
• Follow Right-Plant, Right-Place guidelines and select plants from the UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Plant List.

Indoors

• Replace aerators in kitchen and bathroom sinks with models rated for 1.5 gallons per minute or less.
• Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when full.
• Fix water leaks and drippy faucets.
• Install low-flow water fixtures, such as showerheads.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and many local governments participate in statewide water conservation efforts through the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association’s Water Use Efficiency Division.
