Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners Urges Congress to Fund Flood Risk Management and Resiliency Plan

MIAMI-DADE – The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners today approved legislation sponsored by Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava urging Congress to find the funding for the first steps in re-designing the Central and Southern Florida flood control system so that it is resilient and responsive to anticipated sea level rise.

The resolution asks Congress to fund a restudy that the Army Corps of Engineers is collaborating with the South Florida Water Management District to do. The item urges the US Army Corps of Engineers to develop a resiliency plan for South Florida in a manner that is complementary to Everglades Restoration. It also asks for nature-based and natural infrastructure options as part of the analysis.

“This project is intended to look for solutions to our diminishing drainage capacity as we lose ground to rising seas,” said Commissioner Levine Cava. “It is critical that we support projects to build more resiliency in our county and in other coastal communities. Our future depends on it.”
