Neat Streets Miami Awards Street Tree Matching Grant to the City of Opa-locka

OPA-LOCKA, Fl.  —  In an effort to expand Miami-Dade County’s tree canopy by leveraging local resources, Neat Streets Miami awarded the City of Opa-locka a Street Tree Matching Grant for its Perviz Street Tree Beautification Project in the amount of $10,220. In its sixth year, Neat Streets Miami’s street tree program awarded 15 organizations matching grants to advance the Million Trees Miami initiative, a community-wide effort to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy for Miami-Dade County.

“Perviz Street has been a staple in the City of Opa-locka for many years. The trees that will be lined along the street will contribute to the character and beauty of our City,” said City of Opa-locka City Manager John E. Pate. “Our goal is to continue to serve and maintain the historic beauty of Perviz Street for generations to come. Additionally, the simple act of planting these trees ultimately helps improve our ability to combat many of the environmental and health challenges we face throughout our nation. The City of Opa-locka is committed to becoming a top-tier sustainable city and this project plays a critical role in not only revitalizing our city, but helping to ensure that our streets can be enjoyed by future generations.”

As part of this project, the City of Opa-locka will plant 45 trees to provide shade and beautify the community. The trees will be planted along Perviz Avenue from 151st Street southward to Dunad Avenue. The main goal of the grant is to drive neighborhood revitalization, sustainability, and beautification.

Made possible through the County’s Tree Trust Fund, preference was given to areas with low tree canopy and low-to-moderate income populations.

Launched by Neat Streets Miami, the Million Trees Miami initiative is a community-wide effort to  achieve a 30 percent tree canopy cover for Miami-Dade County.
