SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – The government is being urged to lift a ban placed on exporting plantains to neighboring Haiti.
The call has been made by vendors who sell in a market located on the border with Haiti.
According to the vendors, their plantains are of third quality and are primarily consumed by Haitians due to their specific quality preferences.
They say that based on an order issued by the Minister of Agriculture, Limbert Cruz, soldiers at the border are seizing large quantities of agricultural products purchased by Haitians.
The vendors stated that they have been facing this issue for several months and although there was a period of scarcity, there is now an overproduction, causing market saturation.
They described the export ban as excessive, emphasizing that selling these plantains is their primary means of livelihood and essential for supporting their families and fulfilling their personal commitments.
