MIAMI-DADE – The Miami-Dade County Commission on Dec. 15 approved a resolution sponsored by Chairman-elect Jose “Pepe” Diaz to allow County employees to contribute the monetary value of their accrued holiday and annual leave time to the county’s Emergency Disaster Relief Fund to help Central America recover from the devastating effects of Hurricanes Eta and Iota.
Last month, two Category 4 hurricanes caused widespread damage and more than 170 deaths as much of the region was wracked by flooding and mudslides that wiped out entire communities.
“Our friends and neighbors to the south have suffered catastrophic losses as a result of these two hurricanes, and I know our County employees will open their hearts once again to help, as they have so many times in the past,” Chairman-elect Diaz said.
To ensure that all donated funds are used properly, and because Nicaragua’s authoritarian Ortega regime is reportedly misusing aid, Nicaragua will be excluded from the County’s aid efforts.
In past years, Chairman-elect Diaz has successfully sponsored resolutions to assist communities affected by other natural disasters, including Hurricanes Dorian and Michael.
