Broward Health Gets Hearts Racing

More than 200 Broward Health caregivers and community partners raced to raise money for patients with heart disease. On Saturday, Feb. 9, the cyclists rode for two hours at The Ride Element in Fort Lauderdale.

SpinThon This was the healthcare system’s third annual Spin-a-Thon to benefit its cardiopulmonary rehab program, which is based at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. The rehab program helps about 800 patients a year who have heart disease or lung conditions maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise, education, counseling and training.

The Spin-a-Thon wasn’t all a test of endurance. There was a free breakfast, kids’ zone, health screenings, games and a silent auction. The event was sponsored by donors, including Africk Family Foundation, 626 Holdings, Ultimate Software, Advicare Clinical Denials Recovery, Law Office of Steven Valancy, P.A., Skanska and The Ride Element.

The Spin-a-Thon is part of a series of events Broward Health is hosting for American Heart Month to raise awareness about heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women. For African Americans, the disease can be even more deadly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black Americans are twice as likely to die from heart disease.
