MIAMI– On June 4, 2019, Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo, Jr. kicked off Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month by presenting a proclamation to the Alzheimer’s Association’s Southeast Florida Chapter. Commissioner Bovo also introduced a resolution supporting Governor Ron DeSantis’ request to add Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia as a priority within the Florida Department of Health’s State Health Improvement Plan and urging the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County to include Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia as a priority in Miami-Dade County’s Community Health Improvement Plan.
Founded in 1980, the Alzheimer’s Association has united caregivers and provided support to those facing Alzheimer’s and advance research into the disease. Today, the Association reaches millions of people impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.
“Worldwide, 50 million people are living with Alzheimer's and other dementias,” Commissioner Bovo said. “During Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, I am proud to recognize with my colleagues the wonderful work the Southeast Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association does working to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. I also want to thank my colleagues for approving my resolution supporting Governor DeSantis new direction of the Florida Department of Health to add Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia as a SHIP priority. I encourage all in our county to join the Alzheimer's Association in going purple and raising awareness this June to help find a cure for this debilitating disease.”
