Barbados Light & Power Company Restores 75 Percent of Power Following Island-Wide Blackout
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Barbados Light & Power Company (BLPC) Tuesday said that it had safely restored 75 percent of its customers following an island wide blackout that disrupted water supplies and operations at the island’s airport.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the BLPC did not give a reason for the blackout but said that “our teams have completed all safety inspections and have begun restoring power to customers affected by the outage.
“Our restoration process is ongoing, and we will continue to work to ensure that all of our customers are safely restored.
“Our teams have safely restored 75 percent of our customers affected by today’s outage,” it said, adding “our teams have safely restored customers in parts of St. Lucy, Christ Church, St. Philip and the airport”.
The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) also said that the “island-wide power outage,” had “taken a number of the Authority’s stations offline.
“The BWA is working to restore the water supply by pressing its generators into service.
In the interim, customers in some parts of the island may experience water outages or low water pressure,” it said.
The Authority said it is urging “measured use of water by persons at this time” adding this “should help in efforts to allow water pressures in the system to return to normal”.
As a result of the power outage, all offices of the Supreme Court, all sections of the Registration Department and all Magistrates’ Courts closed early with the judiciary saying it “regrets and apologizes for any inconvenience this closure may have caused.
