Detained Migrant Children Should Be Reunited With Families, Says Commissioner Levine Cava

MIAMI-DADE – During a press conference organized by the American Friends Service Committee (AFS) calling for the shutdown of the Homestead Detention Center, County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava released the following statement:

Com“As a mother and a grandmother, it absolutely breaks my heart knowing that there are children being held like prisoners at a private detention facility, in our very own Homestead. It is appalling and unacceptable that these vulnerable youth are being detained indefinitely. These children are not criminals. Nor are they delinquents. They are kids full of hope who want to be welcomed to our community and to be with their loved ones.

“I stand with the American Friends Service Committee (AFS) in calling for the shutdown of the Homestead Detention Center.  Rather than institutionalizing these young people, which we all know can cause psychological trauma, let’s work together to reunite them with their families as quickly as possible.”
