Leading National Organizations Call for Immediate Resignation of Census Bureau Director Dillingham

Washington, D.C.  – The co-chairs of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights Census Task Force – Arturo Vargas, CEO of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund;  John C. Yang, President and Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC; and Wade Henderson, Interim President and CEO of The Leadership Conference – issued the following statement calling for the immediate resignation of United States Census Bureau Director Dr. Steven Dillingham:

Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins & Miami Dolphins Provide Hundreds of Meals to South Dade Families

MIAMI-DADE – Today (Dec. 23), Jamaican root, Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins proudly hosted her first meal distribution event, in partnership with the Miami Dolphins Foundation Food Relief Program. Commissioner Cohen Higgins was joined by Senior Vice President of the Miami Dolphins Nat Moore, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Consul General from Jamaica R. Oliver Mair, Miami Dolphins Alumnus Shawn Wooden, Miami-Dade School Board Member Luisa Santos, several members of the Cutler Bay Town Council, volunteers from the Neighbors and Neighbors Association (N.A.N.A.), and Mothers Fighting for Justice, and other local leaders. The drive-through meal distribution provided 500 meals to hundreds of families in need.

The US elections, a truly historic event, were certainly high drama having many of us on the edge of our seats over several days. It certainly, in my view, was another epic struggle in the project called the USA, with conservatives versus liberals, rural versus urban, white versus black, capitalism versus socialism, rich versus poor, religious versus secular, and so on.

Consul General Mair to Host Christmas Concert and Telethon for Jamaican Children’s Education Drive

In response to the ongoing need to provide Jamaican children with electronic devices such as tablets and laptops for distance learning, Consul General Oliver Mair will host a Christmas fundraising initiative.  The event titled Mek di Pickney Dem Smile” will feature a Virtual Concert and Telethon, to be held on Sunday, December 20th, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  This will be streamed on PBCJ-TV; www.irietimes.com ;www.IrietimesTV.com;  and www.Jamaicans.com.

Plantation, Florida The nation’s first Caribbean-American heritage museum welcomed members of the media, Caribbean-American leaders and the corporate community to a soft-launch opening on Monday, November 16, 2020. Now open at the Westfield Broward Mall in Plantation, Florida, Island SPACE Caribbean Museum, a new site of archives, events, resources and information, tells the comprehensive story of Caribbean and Caribbean-American societies, and facilitates small meetings, events and educational programs. 

City of Miramar Honors Veterans During COVID-19 With a Free Meal and Commemorative Gift for Veteran’s Day

MIRAMAR, FL  –The City of Miramar celebrated veterans in the community by gifting them with a token of appreciation in honor of Veteran’s Day. The gift package included a hot catered meal, a duffle bag with a patriotic cap, mask, pin and other goodies. Veterans were able to pre-register on Eventbrite to have the gift packages delivered to their doorsteps. They also had the option of picking up the packages in-person at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar.

Team Jamaica Bickle Hands out 5K Awards

New York/CMMInc… The Awards Ceremony to announce the winners of the recently held Team Jamaica Bickle (TJB) Inaugural Virtual 5K Run/Walk, was held on Sunday October 25, 2020. The organization which had since 2011 held its annual 5K Run/Walk at Baisley Pond Park, Queens New York (NY) made the transition to the virtual space this year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The ceremony was streamed live on Jamaicans.com, on TJB’s Facebook Page and its other Social Media Platforms and was hosted by Ms. Ann-Marie Grant, Director of The American Foundation of the University of the West Indies (AFUWI).

OAS Celebrate Spain’s National Day

The Chairman of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, OAS, Ambassador Audrey Marks, today joined the Ambassadors of Spain to celebrate Spain’s National Day, with the laying of a wreath at the Statue of Queen Isabell of Castile, which is located in front of the main building at the OAS. Spain, which remains one of the OAS largest benefactors, each year commemorates the encounter of the two worlds which first took place on October 12 1492 with the Spanish expedition led by Christopher Columbus.

At a the wreath-laying ceremony were their Excellencies Audrey Marks ( second right), Spanish Ambassador to the United States ,Santiago Cabanas (right), Spain’s Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States, Carmen Monton Gimenez (to her left), Secretary General to the Organization of the American States Luis Almagro, (next left ) and Assistant Secretary General to the OAS Nestor Mendez    ( Photo Derrick Scott)
