MIAMI-DADE – The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners today passed a resolution recognizing the month of June as LGBTQ Pride Month – a time of celebration for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community across the country.
County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava sponsored the resolution, leading the effort to recognize the accomplishments, the struggles, and the enduring hope of the LGBTQ community in Miami-Dade County. The resolution recognizes and celebrates the Month of June 2020, and the Month of June each year thereafter, as LGBTQ Pride Month in Miami-Dade County.
“We are proud of the vibrant and diverse LGBTQ community which has contributed invaluably to the social, cultural, and economic life of our county,” said Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava. “I am honored to sponsor this resolution in celebration of Pride Month, as well as to support policies that protect and uplift the LGBTQ community – like creating the LGBTQ Advisory Board and adopting the County’s Human Rights Ordinance to help end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.”
The tradition of celebrating Pride Month traces its roots back to June 28, 1969, when protests erupted after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. The Stonewall protests were the catalyst for an LGBTQ civil rights movement that, over the course of decades, has fought hard for the social acceptance and legal protection of LGBTQ individuals and their families.
