Former Deputy Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Cynthia Alexandria Pratt, Recommended for Governor General

NASSAU, Bahamas – Prime Minister Phillip Davis Tuesday said he had recommended the Bahamas first first female deputy prime minister and minister of national security to become the country’s new Governor General.

aprattCynthia Alexandria PrattIn a statement, Davis said that he hopes the recommendation of Cynthia Alexandria Pratt, who is affectionately known as “Mother,” will “be widely accepted as a representation of Bahamians everywhere”.

She will replace Sir Cornelius A. Smith, who was appointed Governor General on 29 June 2018 and has indicated his intention to demit office on August 31 this year.

He said in accordance with the provisions of Article 32 of the Constitution, he requested on  August 11 that Britain’s King Charles, appoint Mrs. Cynthia Pratt as head of state with effect from September 1, 2023.

Prime Minister Davis said the life of Mrs. Pratt, 78, “is endowed with service, including contributions to nursing, education, politics, sports, and religion”.

She served as a member of parliament for 15 years, serving also as the deputy to the Governor General on several occasions.

Since leaving active, Mrs. Pratt has dedicated herself to roles as an ordained minister and Co-Chair of the Urban Renewal Commission.

“I am confident that the appointment of Cynthia Pratt will be widely accepted as a representation of Bahamians everywhere due to the character and contributions which distinguish her as a nationalist of the highest order.,” Davis said.
