Miami-Dade County Parks Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion Division (formerly known as Miami-Dade Parks Disability Services) is teaming up with USA Badminton to present a “Discover Para-Badminton” clinic on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the NFL YET (National Football League - Youth Educational Town) Center at Gwen Cherry Park, 7090 NW 22 Ave., Miami. The clinic is offered free of charge and provides an opportunity for adults with physical disabilities to come out and try the fun, easy-to-learn adaptive sport of “para-badminton.”
Badminton is a popular “sport for all,” including people with an impairment or disability. The dynamic game is played using a racket to volley a feathered plastic projectile called a "shuttlecock" or "birdie" across a net, without touching the floor. Now a Paralympic sport, para-badminton competitions feature wheelchair and standing classes.
“We are very excited about the Discover Para-Badminton clinic. Paralympic sports activities like para-badminton can improve the lives of people with disabilities. We are empowering people to expand their social circles, to exercise more, and to challenge their skill-sets,” said Mary Palacios, Miami-Dade Parks Manager for Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion.
Pre-registration is required for the Discover Para-Badminton clinic, as equipment and space are limited. To register, contact Belinda Phillips at
The 2019 Discover Para-Badminton clinic is sponsored by Miami-Dade County together with USA Badminton, USA Para-Badminton, and YONEX.
