ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Teenager Jewel Andrew struck his maiden first half-century in only his second match as Leeward Islands Hurricanes remained in control on day two of their third round clash with Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.
Test left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie.The 17-year-old right-hander, fresh from the Young West Indies’ campaign at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa this month, top-scored with 87 to help the hosts to 318 all out in their first innings at Warner Park in Basseterre on Thursday.
Test left-hander Kieran Powell converted his overnight 54 into 65 while tail-ender Jeremiah Louis chipped in with an important 41 as Hurricanes took a first innings lead of 181 runs.
Batting a second time, Red Force finished on 48 without loss, with Vikash Mohan unbeaten on 25 and Cephas Cooper unbeaten on 21.
Resuming the morning on 105 for one, Hurricanes suffered a setback off the day’s second delivery when West Indies white-ball batsman Keacy Carty (11) offered no stroke and lost his off-stump to fast bowler Anderson Phillip (4-62).
Powell, who hit nine fours and faced 101 deliveries, added 29 for the third wicket with Terrance Warde (22) before becoming the first of two wickets in an over from off-spinner Bryan Charles (3-81), caught at slip driving.
When Jahmar Hamilton perished a few balls later, bowled missing a heave at Charles without scoring, Hurricanes were stumbling on 135 for four.
However, Andrew came to his side’s rescue in a knock which lasted 146 balls, a shade over 2-½ hours, and included 10 fours and three sixes.
He put on 33 for the fifth wicket with Warde before dominating in a 107-run sixth wicket stand with Louis, who belted five fours in an innings lasting 105 balls.
At Coolidge Cricket Ground here, reigning champions Guyana Harpy Eagles ended the day with a lead of 178 runs after getting the better of the exchanges.
Left-arm spinners Veerasammy Permaul (3-31) and Gudakesh Motie (3-31) captured three-wicket hauls as West Indies Academy, resuming on 96 for four, were dismissed for 162 in their first innings.
Rashawn Worrell, unbeaten overnight on 34, struck 58 from 146 balls with four fours and three sixes while Joshua Bishop, resuming on 33, made 51 from 55 deliveries with eight fours.
The pair stretched their fifth wicket stand to 90 before the last six wickets tumbled for 34 runs.
Armed with a lead of only 13, Harpy Eagles finished on 165 for five, to head into day three of the contest with a clear advantage.
Kevlon Anderson top-scored with 49, adding 59 for the third wicket with captain Tevin Imlach (29), after Test opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul (22) and Matthew Nandu (19) had posted 41 for the first wicket.
When Harpy Eagles lost three wickets for 26 runs to slip to 129 for four, Kemol Savory (20 not out) and Kevin Sinclair (16 not out) propped up the innings in an unbroken fifth wicket stand worth 36.
Left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd has taken four of the wickets to fall for 27 runs.
