Resuming the day on 245 for six, WI Championship XI flourished courtesy of a 107-run stand between Springer and Joshua Bishop, who scored exactly 50 off 78 balls with eight fours.

All told, the 24-year-old Springer faced 212 deliveries and struck 16 fours and three sixes, helping his side to 358 for seven at lunch, while unbeaten on 105.

Bishop played well but perished in the fourth over before lunch, missing a sweep at off-spinner Dane Piedt (3-41) and falling lbw.

After the break, Springer continued to frustrate the tourists, posting a further 37 for the eighth wicket with Kemar Roach (6) before he was last out, holing out in the deep to Piedt.

Markram then dominated for South Africa, counting 14 fours off 107 deliveries as he put on 36 for the first wicket with Tony de Zorzi (9) and 72 for the third with Bavuma.

Once Markram retired hurt in the final session, Bedingham joined Bavuma to add a further 49 and see South Africa safely to the close.
