NEW YORK, New York – In recognition of Black History Month 2022 and its theme of Black health and wellness, Caribbean American legislators in New York are celebrating the “contributions, triumphs and tribulations” of Blacks who have shaped the United States and those who continue to do so.

Caribbean Owned Small Businesses Get Much Needed Boost

Small business entrepreneurs have always had to work doubly hard to survive in an atmosphere that at times seemed stacked against them. Indeed, the past two years, defined by the global pandemic, have created havoc for many enterprises, big and small. But there are those who see opportunity in adversity. Some of these fearless business owners have been lauded and supported by established institutions for their spunk and success-driven products and services.

Archbishop Tutu Was a Champion of Racial Justice

Trinidadian Steve Dixon, who met Archbishop Tutu, stated that it was with deep sadness that he learned of the passing of the South African Anglican clergyman and passionate anti-apartheid crusader. Archbishop Tutu died at a care home in Cape Town on 26th December 2021, aged 90. He was laid to rest at a state funeral which was held on New Year’s Day.

Caribbean National Gets Top Royal Honor

LONDON, England - A Caribbean national has made history, becoming the first Black person in 700 years to be appointed as a member of the Order of the Garter, England’s oldest and most senior order of chivalry.

JFJ Welcomes New Executive Director – Ms. Mickel Jackson

Mickel’s development and philanthropic career span more than a decade. She has performed leadership roles in program areas such as human rights, HIV and AIDS, youth, and education development. Mickel has secured funding from and worked for projects funded by various donor agencies, including Global Fund, Global Affairs Canada (formerly CIDA), USAID and PEPFAR as well as government and private funders. She possesses extensive experience and proven expertise in external relations, strategic analysis and planning, organizational development, curriculum development and assessment, and resource mobilization. Prior to joining JFJ, she was a senior manager with Jamaica AIDS Support for Life and has worked for the Council of Voluntary Social Services/United Way of Jamaica.
