TOMORROW: Mucarsel-Powell to Continue District Tour, Focus on Health Care

MIAMI, FL – Thursday, August 22, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), member of the Hispanic Caucus’ Health Care and Mental Health Task Force, will continue meeting with constituents and South Florida health care providers to discuss how to ensure access to affordable health care. In the afternoon, Mucarsel-Powell will hold a town hall focused on health care issues facing South Florida residents moderated by Dr. Pedro J. Greer Jr. Dr. Greer is a professor of medicine, Founding Chair of the Humanities, Health, and Society, and Associate Dean for Community Engagement at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Greer has been an advocate for health equity by engaging communities to create effective health and social policies and accessible health systems. ORLANDO, Fla., - Civil Rights Attorney Benjamin Crump boldly announced that he stands with Commissioner Samuel B. Ings for the next Mayor of Orlando.  Attorney Crump, who is best known for fighting high-profile cases involving police shootings of African-Americans, spoke at the 2019 summer conference of National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) held last week in Jackson, Mississippi.

Senator Warren Investigates Reports that ICE has Secretly Transferred Migrants

Washington, DC - United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) yesterday sent a letter to Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Mark Morgan seeking answers regarding reports that ICE has signed new contracts for three for-profit immigration detention centers in Mississippi and Louisiana: Adams County Correctional Center (operated by CoreCivic, one of the largest for-profit prison operators in the country), Catahoula Correctional Center, and South Louisiana ICE Processing Center (operated by GEO Group, another giant for-profit prison operator). If the reports are correct, it appears that ICE has decided to place immigrant detainees at these facilities without providing proper notice, despite the fact that they pose serious health and safety concerns.    

Florida Dems Condemn Trump’s Continued Attacks on Immigrants

Today, Congressman Darren Soto, State Senator Bobby Powell and State Representative Cindy Polo held a press call to denounce Trump’s attacks on the immigrant community, after the announcement of expected raids targeting migrant families to begin on Sunday in 10 cities across the United States, including Miami.
